The Adoption:
On January 18th 2012 we adopted a Galgo we named Milka from the dog rescue association Galgos112. We'd been considering getting our own dog for a long time but coming from a quiet South African suburb with open spaces and large gardened houses I struggled to come to terms with keeping a dog in a small Barcelona apartment in the heart of the city. Nostalgia was the main reason why, for quite some time, I my breed of choice was the Boerboel which is a large, powerful and agile South African farm dog. We even went as far as visiting Boerboel breeders in Germany and Southern Spain but there was just no practical way we could expect to share our little city flat with such a large energetic breed.
Enter the Galgo! A calm, gentle, sleepy breed perfect for any space-challenged home like ours and when one considers the plight of the Spanish Galgo it seemed like a great choice. So I slooooowly got used to the idea of adopting a Galgo instead of buying a pure-bred Boerboel and one fine day we received the photos below of one of their foster dogs and news of her special character that seemed a perfect fit. This dog was rescued and nursed back to health by Galgos112 who found her abandoned with a broken foot and a chain digging into her neck close to a country restaurant in Sevilla where she was living off scavenged scraps.
The Road-trip:
Our Galgo was rescued in Sevilla some 1100 Km away from Barcelona so we decided to avoid unnecessary stress to the animal caused by being delivered via courier service and we decided to drive down to fetch her. To take full advantage of the long trip we offered to transport other foster dogs based in Sevilla belonging to Galgos112 and destined for adoption in Barcelona where the demand is higher. We ended up taking 3 Galgos and 2 mixed breed puppies.
The Blog:
The point of this blog is simple, to make a light hearted photo documentary of my dog. Her weird and wonderful sleeping positions inspired me to share them with the blogosphere. Once in a while I'll also post other photos of her in a less comatosed state to show her Dr Jekyll (at home) and Mr Hyde (in the doggy park) personality.
The photos that I'll be posting are not staged or posed for in any way. It's just pure Milka in her natural habitat, her bed.
Without further delay, I present the inaugural DogNap pic:
